The Portuguese government expresses its deep sorrow at the passing of Afonso Dhlakama, President of the Renamo (Resistência Nacional de Moçambique – Mozambican National Resistance) Party, and presents its condolences to Mr. Dhlakama’s grieving family and to his Party.

Mr. Dhlakama has left an indelible mark in the History of Mozambique, namely due to his commitment to the process leading up to the signing of the 1992 General Peace Accord, and, more recently, to the December 2016 truce in the conflict opposing the government of Mozambique and Renamo.

The passing of Afonso Dhlakama occurs at a time when the President of Renamo and the President of the Republic of Mozambique, Filipe Nyusi, were engaged in talks with a view to achieving peace and reconciliation in Mozambique. The Portuguese government expresses its wishes that this goal may be fully attained, contributing to the stability and development of Mozambique and the wellbeing of the Mozambican people.
