The Portuguese Government strongly condemns the air strike against a detention centre harbouring migrants in Tajoura, near Tripoli, causing the loss of 40 lives and injuries to dozens of people, including women and children.

We call for the responsibilities of this attack to be determined, which may constitute an offence under International Humanitarian Law. We also reiterate that in no circumstances does Portugal regard targeting civilian facilities as acceptable. Civilian infrastructures and human lives should be protected by all the fighting forces.

In the light of this tragic event, the Portuguese Government strongly believes that it is necessary to agree on a ceasefire between all the parties currently relevant to the military conflict in Libya and resume the political negotiations conducted under the auspices of the United Nations.
