The Portuguese Government warmly salutes the conclusion of the negotiations for a Trade Agreement between the European Union and the MERCOSUL.
It is an historic moment for the relations between the EU and MERCOSUL, which marks the culmination of 20 years of negotiations and provides a greater strategic depth to this political and economic partnership.
In a context of strong tensions in international trade, this Agreement is also a clear sign that both the EU and MERCOSUL support an open trade system rooted in rules.
This new commercial partnership - ambitious, wide-ranging and balanced - creates a market of approximately 800 million consumers, which generates important opportunities to both parties.
The Portuguese Government highlights that this Agreement establishes high standards of food safety, consumer protection and social and environmental spheres coverage, namely reinforcing the commitments made regarding the Paris Agreement.
Portugal, which is bound to the countries of MERCOSUL by historical, political, economic and cultural ties, sees the conclusion of the negotiations announced today - to which we made a substantial contribution throughout the process - with great satisfaction.
