The Portuguese Government strongly congratulates the entry into force today of the Free Trade Agreement between the European Union and the Republic of Singapore.
The Portuguese Government stresses the Agreement's political scope, the first to enter into force between the EU and a country of South-East Asia, which represents a very significant step in strengthening the relationship between EU and Singapore and between EU and ASEAN.
This Agreement marks the opening of a potentially significant new market for national enterprises.
The Agreement confirms that rules-based free trade continues to play an important role in the proper functioning of the international system, contributing decisively for economic growth and prosperity.
The Agreement's very comprehensive nature should be underlined, including trade in goods and services, non-tariff barriers, technical standards, geographical indications, public procurement, investment protection, regulatory issues and sustainable development, being a model for future EU agreements with other countries of the South-East Asian region.
