The Portuguese Government salutes the signing of a Peace and Reconciliation Agreement between the Government of the Central African Republic (CAR) and the armed groups of that country on 6 February, at Bangui. Portugal further commends the signatories on the commitment shown towards achieving peace in the CAR, as well as the involvement of the African Union through its Commissioner for Peace and Security, Ambassador Smail Chergui.

The Portuguese Government trusts that the parties will show the same level of commitment towards the implementation of the Agreement and honour their commitments so that the CAR may again have stability and its sustainable development may be ensured.

Portugal remains committed in its support to peace and stability in the CAR, namely through the participation of its National Forces deployed with the United Nations and European Union missions, which currently constitutes the largest contingent of Portuguese troops in Africa.
