The Portuguese Government warmly welcomes the signing of the Peace and Reconciliation Agreement between the Mozambican Government and the Mozambican National Resistance (RENAMO), which took place in Maputo, on 6 July. This Agreement results from a long negotiation process and is an essential development towards the peace and prosperity of the Mozambican people.

The signing of this Agreement followed the signing of the Agreement on the Cessation of Hostilities, which was also signed by the President, Mr. Filipe Nyusi, and the leader of RENAMO, Mr. Ossufo Momade, in Gorongosa, on 1 August.

Portugal - which was represented in the signing ceremony of the Peace Agreement by Her Excellency the Secretary of State of Foreign Affairs, Ms. Teresa Ribeiro - congratulates Mozambique for this definite step towards the development of the country and the proper functioning of the democratic system.

The Portuguese Government restates its commitment to support the Mozambican authorities with the new cycle that starts today. Portugal also calls for the active involvement of the international community in the consolidation of peace and in the promotion of the safety and wellbeing of the Mozambican people.
