Portuguese Citizens in the United Kingdom

From the 1st of January, Portuguese citizens who intend to live in the United Kingdom and are not eligible for settled status within the scope of the EU Settlement Scheme must request a visa before their departure for the United Kingdom, according to the new British immigration system (UK Points-based Immigration System).

Portuguese citizens and their family members, who have taken up residence in the United Kingdom before the 31st of December 2020, must request settled status, under the EU Settlement Scheme and acquire permanent settled status (settled status), or temporary settled status (pre-settled status) until the 30th of June 2021.

Entries in the United Kingdom

Portuguese citizens will be able to enter the United Kingdom for stays of up to six months with their valid Citizen Cards until the 30th of September 2021. From the 1st of October 2021, a Passport will be required to visit the United Kingdom.

Depending on the circumstances, it may also be necessary to request a visa for work travels. Further information may be obtained through the following link: https://www.gov.uk/visit-uk-business-trip

Portuguese nationals holding settled status or pre-settled status, under the EUSS, may continue to use their Citizen Cards to enter the United Kingdom until the 31st of December 2025.

Relevant dates 

  • 1 January 2021 - entry into force of the new points-based immigration system.
  • 30 June 2021 - deadline for submission of applications to the EU Settlement Scheme.
  • 1 October 2021 - compulsory presentation of Passport for the entry of non-residents in the United Kingdom.
  • 31 December 2025 - holders of settled status, within the scope of the EU Settlement Scheme, may no longer enter the United Kingdom with their Citizen Cards.
